Why You May Need a Dental Crown

While dental crowns are used in cosmetic dentistry procedures and are typically outside the scope of what insurance providers deem to be necessary, for many patients in Edmonton, they’re much more than a smile enhancing device. Here’s what you should know about them and why they might be right for you.

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is an artificial tooth made to fit over a damaged, broken, irregularly shaped or discoloured tooth in order to restore or improve the tooth’s natural appearance. Dental crowns can also help to prevent further damage to the tooth.

Dental crowns can be made of gold, composite, porcelain or a combination of materials. Composite and porcelain are the most popular choices because of their natural-looking finish.

When is a Crown Needed?

You may need a dental crown if you’ve developed a cavity too large to be filled without weakening the tooth (for instance if you’ve had a root canal or suffered a trauma that left you with a broken tooth). You may also need a crown if you’re trying to improve the appearance of your smile and have discolored or irregularly shaped teeth.

Not all teeth can be fitted with a dental crown. Because the crown must be affixed over top of a natural tooth, you need to have enough of your natural tooth remaining to bind with the artificial tooth and ensure that it functions as it should. Teeth that are severely decayed or damaged may be unable to support a crown and may be better suited to an implant. Before you can know if you’re a good candidate for a dental crown, you’ll need to schedule a visit with a dentist.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

With good dental hygiene habits, a crown will last for about 10 years. Teeth that have been fitted with crowns require the same care and attention as your natural teeth, which means that you still need to brush them and floss regularly.
